Georges Road, N7

Islington, London       Tender        Five Houses & Office    Mixed-Use

On a narrow infill site wedged between a former Victorian school and a vehicle repair workshop, this proposal transforms a cluster of semi-derelict and underused sheds into a new contemporary terrace of five family townhouses alongside a purpose-built commercial office.

Following the established datums of the building line and re-creating the traditional Islington townhouse, the design utilises well-proportioned brick frontages with floor to ceiling doors and windows to establish a new rhythm within the local streetscene.

Located just off the busy Holloway Road, the project will provide new family housing; four of the houses, with three-beds each, providing private roof terraces connecting to the living spaces and bedrooms below, all with balconies and access to rear gardens. The final house, designed to address the relationship to the locally listed adjacent former school building, now flats, is a spacious one-bedroom house with a rear garden and dual aspect rooms.

Each of the houses benefit from open-plan living accommodation and Juliet balconies. The rear gardens, accessed through large folding doors, provide an escape from urban living, surrounded by trees and greenery. The quality of the internal spaces being the key driver to relate to the exterior and ensure all spaces are bright, comfortable and create privacy both for and from the neighbouring properties.
