Castelnau Coach House, SW13

Richmond, London       Complete       170sq.m.       Signature House

The two-storey mews Coach House is part of the wider re-development of an existing three-storey terraced parade with a high-street frontage and flats above, adjacent to the backland site which has created this three-bedroom home.

The design focuses on access and mobility, as the home was created for the client's elderly parents. As such, the proposal incorporated a ground floor master bedroom suite and a hidden fitted lift, providing easy access to the first floor. The house is arranged around a private courtyard, positioned to catch the afternoon sunlight. This protects the privacy of the occupants whilst avoiding an impact on the amenity of the neighbours, with the internal layout revolving around windows onto this bright space, which also improves access in and out of the house.

The design alongside the floor to ceiling windows provide light into the heart of the main living spaces whilst maintaining a tranquil environment. This has also enhanced the connection between the inside and outside, increasing the feel  of the space and light within the tight constraints of the plot.

The interior design mixes rustic and traditional materials with more contemporary features. The arching exposed timber beams are a key feature of the living space and the main kitchen and dining room. The house benefits from a high level of insulation and photovoltaic panels on the roof. These items support an air source heat pump which provides the underfloor heating throughout the house.
