Alma Street, NW5

Kentish Town, London      Complete        100 sq.m.      House Renovation & Extension

We have been working to renovate and extend a terraced house in Kentish Town in a Conservation Area. Seeking to increase the space and simplify the layout of the interior we have secured permission to rationalise an existing rear extension with a new brick and glazed open-plan kitchen and dining room.

Located above that, floating seamlessly in the glazed roof, is a new bathroom extension providing a designer space as well as freeing up internal area at first floor for these spaces to be completely renovated and re-imagined.

Despite being within a traditional vernacular, the planners have accepted the contemporary design that has been proposed as a unique addition to the street.

Having secured planning permission we are working to develop a comprehensive tender package for the project. We are exploring the use of off-site manufacturing techniques, enabling the first floor extension to be craned into position as a self-contained pod.

The materials selected include significant use of glazing for the roof of the ground floor extension in addition to rooflights and large windows. The first floor pod will benefit from Shou Sugi Ban charred-larch cladding to create a maintenance-free and textural quality to this element, which will have a green roof above.

The project is expected to commence on site in Autumn 2019.
