Future-proofing a home for accessible living

Works began in September on this wrap-around side and rear extension and refurbishment project in Enfield. The focus of the project is to improved accessibility to the existing semi-detached house.

The refurbishment works include levelling the ground floor, and creating a new bedroom and en-suite bathroom at that level. The spaces have been designed to be used comfortably by a wheelchair user. Externally, a level ramp provides access from the front, and at the rear a raised patio provides greater independent access for our clients now and in the future.

The accessible en-suite bathroom has a flush threshold and floor including the walk-in shower, and support rails, seats and other features to aid mobility and use. The space follows a wet-room design, controlling moisture and drainage. And we have selected high quality fixtures, fittings and fixtures which are both practical and stylish.

The trend in the UK of an ageing population means designers need to be creating more comfortable and flexible spaces for all building users. With the roof now watertight and the delivery of windows approaching, the project will be completed in early 2023.
